I am curious why it seems that virtually all manufacturers use an excessive amount of down to fill their DAMs. I cannot for the life of my work out why a DAM would need a larger mass of down than the quilt used on top of it. I am aware that the R-value obtained from down is not 100% loft and so some compressed overfill does indeed contribute to additional R-value (though not as efficiently as if it was at full loft), but why does one not find DAMs with 2-3 oz of down fill? Even bender seems to use significantly more fill than this though I'm sure he will custom make whatever I specify.
