Efoodsdirect.com is giving away 6 meals for the cost of shipping ($10). Never had so I'm not sure if they are good for hiking, but for $10 I'm gonna find out.

Looks interesting. Are these freeze dried? It's emergency preparedness food, I wonder if it's still lightweight. Either I will put in an order.

This is actually 3 physical packets – 6 servings. Shipping makes it roughly $3.33 per packet. About half of what you'll pay at REI for freeze dried food.

If you are going to buy any one of their non free packages 2 weeks supply or more it comes out to roughly $3 per packet, even cheaper than the "Free" sample.

I ordered the trial pack – if this works out I'll get a few weeks supply for hiking. Good deal.

Looking at the preparation instructions, each of the three samples suggest boiling for 12-20 minutes and then letting it rest for a few minutes more. They might not rehydrate sufficiently if just left to rest with a pour of boiling water like most backpacking foods.

It might not be a deal breaker, plenty of people hear actually cook their food on their stoves, but these might take more fuel than other options.
