Thinking about making a Hexamid. Basically just a 6 sided teepee.

Question is do I want to cat curve the sewn edges ??

And if so how much per foot. I have read 3/4 per foot but not sure
    if that is correct.

    silnylon?

4 sided pyramid – I use 2 inches deflection for 8 foot long diagonal

    6 sided – I think you'de want 2 inches * 4 sides / 6 sides = about 1.5 inches deflection

    1st one silnylon.

2nd probably cuben later on when I work out the bugs.

From my understanding of how things work, a cuben tent, mid, tarp, etc.., doesn't need cat cuts. The cat cuts are to help the stretchy, saggy (with moisture), silnylon stay taut, where cuben does not stretch and does not absorb any moisture.

I'm making a cuben hexamid right now, and the ridge and all outer edges are cat cut. Many commercial cuben shelters have cat cut ridgelines or outer edges. It provides the same benefit for a cuben shelter that it does for a silnylon shelter. Cuben has low stretch, but it can still flap in the wind.

Maybe with Cuben you need fewer inches of deflection per foot of ridgeline?

But it's not that critical, you can have more or less?

I used a total deflection of 2" for all of the edges of my hexamid. I think anything more than 1" would work fine, and very large deflections (>3") are only a problem because they begin to reduce coverage.

    Troy,

Lance Marshall's website has a great catenary curve calculator spreadsheet. It is the 3rd item in the menu on his homepage.

    http://www.wvi.com/~ulmyog/

Enter the length of your seams in inches, pick your degree of severity and the spreadsheet gives you your calculated deflection at the midline.

I use Google Chrome and I had to click enable editing in the top center portion of the toolbar to get it to allow me to change the values.

    I hope this helps.

    Party On,

    Newton
