Please guide me through the choices for staking a shelter in a variety of snow conditions.

Don't worry, I sllow them to dress in warm clothes. Well, fairly warm. Sure, there is a lot of griping and complaining, but I've only lost 2 ankle-biters in all my years.

But if conditions are right and I can find enough wood (around the bases of trees if the base is not too deep, etc.) a great trick is to use sticks as deadman anchors. By using a taughtline hitch (or something similar) you can remove just your guyline from the snow if everything freezes solid, leaving the sticks behind. It's saved me a lot of hassle by not having to use an axe/shovel to chop out frozen anchors in the morning.

Jan 21, 2012 at 12:05 am #1827556Won't the snow just hold it down?
