I’ve been looking to replace my well-worn and loved Cloudveil walk don’t run power stretch hoody. I’m planning on staying synthetic and have come up with these 3:
NW Alpine Black Spider Light, $90- 10 oz. in medium, made in USA, microgrid fleece?
Patagonia RI, $149- 11.5 oz in medium, Made in Colombia, polartec power dry
Wild Things ¼ zip hoody ,$119- no weight given, made in USA, polartec power stretch
I am a big fan of Wild Things with a number of pieces of their kit and was leaning towards their hoody because of the power stretch, but the top has two big negative issues; no thumb loops and the zipper does not go deep enough.
I'm am now leaning towards the Black Spider. it's the least expensive and lightest of the three. What are some of the other synthetic hoodies out there that people can recommend.
Oct 21, 2011 at 8:39 am #1793403mec polartec power dry hoodie … 62$ … 10 oz … very deep zipper, thumb loops, no stupid pocket … also note that there is no fabric over the zipper, so if the chin itch gets you it may not be yr thing … only thing is youll need to take a trip to canada to pick one up ;)
i own and use the non hooded version currently …. basically a R1 copy at less than 1/2 the price

Oct 21, 2011 at 9:26 am #1793418Aren't power dry and micro grid fleece essentially the same thing ?
Oct 21, 2011 at 9:29 am #1793419power dry is a micro grid fleece, but i don't know if every micro grid fleece is power dry.
Oct 21, 2011 at 3:24 pm #1793543the melanzana micro grid is a good very comfortable all around hoody, but it is not "technical". No thumbholes, but arms are shaped to cover part of palm up to the thumb. Long enough that you could add them if wanted for many people. Also no zipper.
The good things about the melanzana is that the hood cinches closed around the face like a balaclava, great for sleeping. While hood is off the head, you can tighten up around neck to retain heat too. Also has the traditional hoody front hand pockets (which add lot of weight). Not much use while wearing a pack, but good when take off.
The grid is on the outside though, not inside like patagonia, inside is felted fleece surface. Pretty warm too for such a light fleece. My L weighs 11oz. Replace the heavy shock cord and keeper with smaller, for some reason they use large dia heavy duty.
Oct 21, 2011 at 3:32 pm #1793547I got an EMS Power Stretch hoodie on sale last year and I love it. It is full zip though. http://www.ems.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3646559&lmdn=Brand
