Umbrellas are definitely more cool than hats, IMO. Also, not as hot. You can feel the breeze better and no sweaty head bands to deal with.
I use shock cord to attach my Snow Peak umbrella to a hiking pole so I can adjust my hand position up and down and all around. I don't get a crick in my elbow that way.
