I am planning a 2 or 3 night trip in Shenandoah National Park around May 22-24. What's the flying/biting bug situation this time of year? I have never hike in this area before.

Late May in Shenandoah National Park is the height of tick season, so expect some company on your arms and legs if you don't use Permethrin and Deet (which I recommend). There will be some gnats/flies/mosquitos buzzing about occasionally but I've never found them to be in high concentration except around some streams.
