Has anyone every spayed diluted silicone on from a spray bottle?
I have a number of projects that are in mind involving
waterproofing stuff and coating a tent floor.I have some uncoated ripstop nylon I want to make water proof to use for
various things like stuff sacks for clothing.I have read a number of postings about applying silicone involving brushing
on or spreading with a glove etc..I was thinking that one of those olive oil sprayers that you pump up might work also and
would allow for a continuous spray pattern for more even coating.Mar 18, 2011 at 7:49 am #1710659You mean like 10:1 mineral spirits to silicone caulk?
Sometimes when you spray, it doesn't completely wet the surface. If you brush it back and forth a couple times it will have better contact between the mineral spirits/silicone and the fabric.
Like if you spray paint a house it's sometimes good to go over it with a brush after you spray to work it in better. Otherwise you can have air bubbles.
Mar 18, 2011 at 8:10 am #1710673I was wondering about how well it would soak into the fabric if sprayed.
Not having done the brush method I have no idea what it's like to spread the stuff on.
Maybe spraying on and then dry brushing over it to push it into the fabric.
Just seems spraying on would go faster and was hoping to find someone who might
have done it to give some insight, before I wasted any time trying.Mar 18, 2011 at 8:45 am #1710692Craig,
Take a look at this earlier post on a similar thread.
There is another embedded active link in the thread that shows a picture of the spray that I used. I got it at Wal Mart in their camping section.
I sprayed the exterior only as the tent that I was working with was PU coated rip stop nylon and the coating was on the interior of the tent. I don't like mixing the two types of coatings but it was a $14.00 K-Mart flashing blue light special. ;-)
Also I have some spinnaker fabric that I used to make a flat tarp and it was silicone impregnated nylon with a PU coating on one side from the factory. So I guess that I wasn't the first to do this mixing of metaphors. ;-)
Party On,
Newton

The total area is small, if you were painting a house then a spray would be more useful
Thinned 10:1 (or more) is pretty thin so it brushes easily
