I got a big roll of this blue foam, but I don't know what type it is— I think it is EVA. It is closed cell, with a "skin" on the surface, 3/16" (5mm) thick, and a piece that is 20" wide and 67" long weighs 7.6oz/220g.
The roll is 67" wide and there must be 30 feet of the stuff.
Any ideas?

Sure looks like EVA foam to me. Have fun inventing stuff!

I never knew there were so many kinds of EVA-based foam. From what I gather, they vary in EVA content (18% for the good MEC/Zotefoams stuff) and I did know about different manufacturing techniques— fluffing with nitrogen gas, etc.
Should be good under my torso-length Prolite and for sit pads. Can hammock folk use it for insulation?
Nov 23, 2010 at 7:27 pm #1667457i worked out the math a bit ago on the mec blue vs. yellow vs thermarest pads
if the R values are to be believed then the mec blue actually had a higher R value than yellow for a given weight and area/thickness …
youll prob get an R value 1/2 of the 1cm blue mec pad … so 1.3 / 2 =0.65
no idea about hammocks … i aint a koala =P
the reflectix is listed as 1.25 oz/ ft2 … so 11.25 oz/ yd 2 … for an R value of 1.1 if we accept the manuf claim … which is an R per oz/yd of 0.097
the mec blue standard 9.25 oz / yd if my math is correct … for an R value of 1.36 .. R per oz/yd of 0.146
the mec yellow standard 13.75 oz / yd if my math is correct … for an R value of 1.6 .. R per oz/yd of 0.116
the yellow thermalest zlite is 12.93 oz / yd 2 … for an R value of 2.2 … giving and R per oz/yd of 0.17
the RR Solar is 17 oz / yd 2 … for an R value of 3.5 … giving and R per oz/yd of 0.20
