Sponsor company? Paying every penny myself! :(
OTOH, thanks to two years of accumulation, I was able to turn in 90,000 miles + $75 fee for business class ticket LAX –> Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur –> LAX. :)Oct 9, 2010 at 7:39 am #1652843

Have a great trip! Are you using the iPad during this trip?
DougOct 9, 2010 at 5:19 pm #1652977
Thanks again. Yes, I'm bringing my iPad. I've loaded all six guidebooks — and saved about 3lbs. of weight. Just finished packing. Total pack weight – just under 11 lbs.Oct 9, 2010 at 5:31 pm #1652982

Wow. First off I'm envious as all heck. Second, 11 pound pack weight? You are only packing 11 pounds for 5 months of travel?
May I ask what you are bringing?Oct 9, 2010 at 7:29 pm #1653014

Have the best time ever Ben! Sadly, my columbus weekend trip has a pack already weighing in at 15lbs…I have no idea how you're doing it, but keep it up. Be sure to tour the viet cong tunnel systems and hire a junk to tour hao long bay!Oct 12, 2010 at 8:27 am #1653732
Just a few more hours to go before hitting the airport. Everything all done — except an EXTREME FRUSTRATION with my new iPad!!
Ah me… I bought the iPad specifically for this trip — so I can avoid hauling 5 different guidebooks. Well, yesterday, I synced my iPad via iTunes on my PC. A message came up saying there was a new software update for my iPad. I downloaded the thing (2 friggin' hours!) and then the software proceeded to run — and then returned with an "unknown error"!!! WTF?
So I clicked the restore button — and then got another "unknown error — restore failed!! Now, my iPad is completely unuseable! Great, spent $550 buying it and another $100+ on guidebooks (PDF files) and a few appls. All wasted.
Just tossed the 5 guidebooks into my pack. Sigh….Oct 12, 2010 at 9:10 am #1653748
I know it's late in the game, but you might be able to hand off the iPad to a friend who could get things straightened out and then ship it to you.
Or Not. And just leave the tech stuff at home ;-)Oct 12, 2010 at 10:55 am #1653784
If Ben is still checking the site, which Target Embark backpack? The 1) two pocket with shock cord on front or the 2) two pocket with front mesh pocket or 3) four pocket laptop backpack? Just curious.Oct 12, 2010 at 3:53 pm #1653899
I'm still here. Just waiting for the last load of laundry to finish. :)
I went to the Apple store this morning and they reset my pad to factory settings. I had a couple of hours' pleasure re-synching and re-customizing my apps and data files. But at least everything is in good order now. I certainly won't be synching while on the road…
John — this is my pack — $9 during "Back to School" sale.Oct 12, 2010 at 4:15 pm #1653908
