I'm looking for a tripod to take with me into the mountains. It'll be used for both my little video cam and also for a rather large spotting scope. Most of the small/leightweight tripods I've seen have a ball head, which is not ideal for my purposes. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd like it to be around 16" folded and hopefully under 2.5 lbs. I've googled the hell out of this and still don't know what to get. I can find some decent ones on amazon.com,unfortunatley shipping to Canada is either impossible or really expensive. If I can find some specific models to shop for,I might be able to find them in Canada.

If not a ball head, then what do you seek? A pan-tilt or a gimbal? How tall are you seeking?

You might consider the Benro Travel Angel series:

paired with a Gitzo G2180 head.

Check out http://www.ReallyBigCameras.com. I use one of their traveler models as my backpacking tripod — and I shoot with a 4×5 monorail.

If you're looking at tripods with built-in ballheads, keep your checkbook closed. They're not worth spending money on. For whatever reason, no one who makes tripod legs worth anything includes a head of any kind.

If you're looking for a pan/tilt head, look at the Manfrotto line and Gitzo lines, or if you want to save weight, check these guys out: http://acratech.net. They're among the lightest ballheads out there. If you want to go whole-hog, look at Wimberly. They are pretty much the last word in gimbal mounts for cameras.

You can check out a large range of tripods and specs here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/. Not sure on shipping costs to Canada.

Check out the Slik Sprint Pro EX:

It come with a two way pan head that works great with a big spotting scope. Its a bit longer than what you are looking for at 19" but is a really good tripod and reasonably priced too.

I tend not to look at tripod & head combinations with less then 20 pound load capacities, so I overlooked this one :)

I have a feisol 3342 (carbon fiber) + Markins M10 head. Total weight is 3.5lbs — if you find something lighter with equal quality I'd love to hear about it! I've had this tripod for 2 years now and been very happy with it. Considered a poor man's gitzo
