I go to Subway, smile, and ask them if I can have some olive oil packets for camping. They usually ask "How many?" , and I end up with quite a handful. Never been denied.

Also, look for "single serving" salad dressing packets at supermarket salad bars. Newman's Italian is great. (not Creamy Italian.)

If you need a large quantity, try minimus.biz, but only if you can put together an order large enough to justify shipping.

    Edit: Corrected typo. Thanks Bob.

Minimus is your best choice. You only need order $20 in stuff for free shipping!

$20 worth of olive oil is a lot of packets.

There is plenty of tasty and fun items to order ;-) $20 at Minimus equals a summer of better tasting food! I think the best part is being able to get one item of something exotic to try – or hard to find items like lower sodium soy sauce (something I love).

Carrabba's restaurants have them for takeout. Get some carryout and ask for a few extra packets. A couple bucks tip will get you enough to last all summer!

Since were on Mediterranean cuisine, do any of these places, or others that you know of also have the parmesean cheese packets?

    The Costco food court ;-)

But seriously….Minimus, Minimus and Minimus! They carry the good sized green Kraft ones which hold up well in packs.

I read that as Parmesan Jackets. :)
Why not carry a chunk of Parmesan and cut it into your food?
Wrap well in plastic or dunk in wax.

"Factory grated" cheese is much more consistent than anything I grate myself. If it is a sealed foil packet, its shelf life is very long and it has little odor (which is important when in bear country). If I have to use my own knife to carve up a block of cheese, then that will be just one more thing to be washed.

The packets are extraordinarily handy to have along – you can figure out ahead "Oh I need 2 or 3 packets per dinner" and then also toss in a couple more – shelf stable Parmesan really helps enhance a bland meal and also works as a thickener if you add too much water.

Aren't parmesan packets full of that stuff that smells and tastes like vomit? Maybe it's an acquired taste?

I don't hike in bear country, so a hunk of real parmesan finely sliced into a meal is one of my favourite treats. Yum. And I don't bother washing the knife if all it's had on it was some cheese. It's not like I'm gonna get food poisoning from it. However you really have to hide your cheese well from those pesky Keas!

Lynn, I think we should export some brown bears and black bears to your backpacking area to help clean up the Keas.

Maybe we should export some of our Keas to tear the rubber off of your gear and parked cars? I'm sure Keas would love teasing the bears too ;)

No, we don't need Keas for that. In the Mineral King area, we have yellow-bellied marmots that will eat anything rubber or leather as if it was candy.

I've often considered "harvesting" one of those fat little critters.

    Sorry about that!

Yes, my mom and I started Packit Gourmet a couple of years ago. We needed some of these hard-to-find items and it was pretty frustrating looking for them all over the place – so if others are looking for them, I like to tell them where they can find them. If you'd like us to try to find anything else and carry it on the site, just let me know and we'll do our best!

BTW – any chance we'll be able to add a standard signature line to our posts? That would really help with things like this.
