This is simple. The Intelligent Designer put this in to keep people from leaving ( getting away ) from the group. Most of the time it works but some get away.

Also, I think if the earth was flat, it would be easier to walk in straighter lines. The way things are, even if you walk in a straight line, you end up back where you started.
