    (This is totally tongue in cheek you all!)

    Averaging 480 calories and 20 grams fat, they weigh in at 4 1/2 ounces.

    Do the math and see the benefits of the calories. Even better…you can just stick in in your maw while you hike. No chewing needed!

    I used to beg mamma for a chocolate creme pie, every trip to the store. Mmmmmmm.

    :-D

    What is funny is that Hostess still uses beef fat for the frying. I noticed Safeway finally pulled it out.

    Sadly, I loved these as a kid. Dang, how can tallow taste soooo good? ;-)

    Tasty, maybe; bulky, yes.
    450 calories in 4 oz = only 112 calories per oz.

    For less bulk and more go-power, try these: I make up 3 oz net weight packets of each for snacks, except for the big Payday bar which is 3.4 oz as purchased

    cashews = 170 cal/oz………3 oz = 510 cals

    Pringles = 150 cal/oz……..3 oz = 450 cals

    Peanut M&Ms = 144 cal/oz…..3 oz = 432 cals

    King size Payday bar = 140 cal/oz…3.4 oz = 476 cals

    Not being required to use a bear can where I normally hike … I think I could find room for a couple of those in my food bag. Maybe one for each of the even numbered days, or perhaps those divisible by 3;-)

    Problem is…for me 3 out of the 4 above items I can't eat due to braces :-( I am 1 year 7 months in….

    Pringles are the only thing I can eat in that list…..

    As a side bennie, the Safeway versions are all dye free except for cherry flavor.

    M7M's have dye so I can't have them either.

    I have been known to eat the Fred Meyer brand lemon fruit pies. They're inedible in town, but they taste great on the trail. Now that I have the seal of approval from Sarah and Dicentra, I will feel guilty no longer!
