Big difference ;-) He needed time to clear his head and think. Cannot blame the man – and apparently his security knows where is.Jun 24, 2009 at 7:41 am #1510158
For those of you keeping track, a reporter spotted Sanford in the Atlanta airport. Turns out he wasn't hiking at all. He was in Argentina.
I'm sure nothing shady was going on…

He was just visiting his girlfriend. Of course he is married. Oh well. You would think by now politicians would have figured out how easy it is for them to get caught.Jun 25, 2009 at 7:02 pm #1510497

How does a governor think he can ever get away with this?
I can't resist offering this perfectly simple explanation, hopefully not in TOO bad taste …. it was once explained to me that men are created with two heads but not enough blood supply to simultaneously operate both of them.Jun 26, 2009 at 1:36 pm #1510622

I read that the AT has lots of ups and downs, can be a dirty affair where one can get sweaty and occasionally wet, is this correct ?

It's not just Sanford who's been on the AT.
Again, for those of you trying to keep track this is what the Republican party has been doing on the AT since 2006:
September 2006: Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), a fierce opponent of child pornography, resigns after it surfaces that he has sent illicit emails to teenage pages.
October 2006: Current Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons is accused of assaulting a woman in a parking garage by throwing her against a wall and threatening to rape her. She drops criminal charges, citing intimidation by his campaign. She does, however, file a civil suit. In June 2009, Gibbons asks a judge to seal his phone records against her lawyers, something that may also have to do with his ongoing divorce proceedings, in which he's accused of more affairs.
April 2007: Randall Tobias, Bush's Global AIDS Coordinator who spoke out against prostitution (and condom use, for that matter), resigns from the State Department after he is linked to an escort service. He maintained that there was no sex, just massages.
July 2007: Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), an abstinence-only sex ed advocate, is linked to the D.C. Madam's high-end escort service. He has not resigned, and plans to seek re-election next year.
July 2007: Glenn Murphy Jr., president of the Young Republican National Federation who advised GOP-ers to use g_ay marriage as a wedge issue, is accused of trying to perform oral sex on a sleeping 22-year-old man. In 1998, a young man had filed an uncannily similar report against Murphy.
July 2007: Florida State Rep. Bob Allen, the co-chair of McCain's 2008 Florida campaign, is arrested for offering an undercover cop $20 for the privilege of performing oral sex on him. He later says he was afraid of becoming a "statistic," as he thought the black cop was a mugger. Allen previously advocated keeping g_ay couples from adopting children and applying stiffer penalties for lewd acts.
August 2007: Sen. Larry "Wide Stance" Craig (R-ID) pleads guilty in August 2007 to disorderly conduct for soliciting sex from an undercover cop in a Minneapolis airport bathroom. He refuses to resign, but does not run for re-election.
May 2008: Family values champ Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY) ends his re-election bid after a drunk driving arrest leads to the revelation that he has had both an affair and a child with another woman.
June 2009: Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), who called on Clinton to resign and has spoken about the "sanctity of marriage," admits to an affair with Cynthia Hampton, a staffer and the wife of another Ensign staffer, whom Ensign helped to secure new employment after the affair was discovered.
June 2009: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who called for the ousters of Bill Clinton and Rep. Bob Livingston (R-LA) over their extramarital affairs, admits to a year-long affair with a woman in Buenos Aires after disappearing for a week.
Family values, baby, family values…

Thank you everyone for educating us that politicians are full of sh@t.

News flash: If we all spent half the time that we spend obsessing about gear holding politicians accountable for their behavior and, you know, actually representing the people's wishes, we wouldn't be inching our way toward totalitarianism and a wrecked planet.

I think its refreshing to hear about politicians being real people who make real mistakes. Its to bad that we hold them so strictly accountable for thier personal lives that we really dont pay much attention to the real issues. Its not like people are like "hmmmm, if a politician did it, maybe i should". Nobody should care about anything but the issues, but then we wouldnt know who to vote for. NOBODY is squeeky clean, and if somebody was, they would be to naive to run anything more significant than a preschool.
That list of political hypocrisies is awesome though. Accusations are are as good as confessions. Remember that when you call somebody an ass, Dave. Wanna save the world?…get a sense of humor.Jun 26, 2009 at 8:11 pm #1510684

Why limit your list to only Republicans.
How could you omit the great one himself Bill "I did not have sexual relations with that women" Clinton. Now there is a fine example of family values if ever there was one.
