> not everyone uses the same set of stakes
So true.
My 10 stakes in their aloksac ziplock weigh 1.6oz and are always included in my shelter weight.Apr 17, 2009 at 4:12 pm #1494983Assuming lows down to 60 degrees:
ULA Amp – 13.0 oz.
AMK Thermolite 2 bivy bag – 6.88 oz.
Custom Cat tarp – 8.5 oz.
NeoAir Pad – 13.75 oz.Total: 42.13 oz./2.63 lbs.
Assuming lower temps:
Substitute Marmot Atom (long) -23.00Total:58.25 oz./3.64 lbs.
Apr 17, 2009 at 4:58 pm #1494997While I will probably be laughed off the site as I am not UL, I do try to be as light and low-volume (as I have learned that means a lot in some conditions) as I can depending on many factors.
What is your hypothetical scenario Ali? Overnighter, week-long, or thru-hike? Solo, I assume. My weights are all over the place depending on where I am (mountains vs lowlands) and who I am with. I am actually lighter sometimes when I am with my B-I-L Dave as he is UL and pushes me once in a while to see if I can go-as-low as him. (NO, but I try.)
Apr 17, 2009 at 5:21 pm #1495003Summer 1 – about 2lbs
Pack – GG Whisper – 4 oz
Bag – synthetic quilt – 11 oz
Tarp – Brawnylight – 11 oz inc guy lines and stakes
Pad – GG Thinlight – 3/8 trimmed – 5oz
Ground Cloth (polycro) – .5 oz?
Pillow – 1 ozSummer 2 – about 2¾ lbs
Pack – GG Murmur – 8 oz
Bag – Sierra Designs Wicked Light (old down top bag) – 14 oz
Tarp – BPL SpinTarp X-Pro – 7 oz inc guy lines and stakes
Pad – short Ridgerest – 9 oz
Ground cloth (Tyvek)- 4.5 oz
Pillow – 1 ozAdded ground cloths and pillow to complete my sleep system.
Switch packs according to expected water availability.
All weights rounded up & include stuff sacks (if used)
Often switch tarps and bags around according to expected weather.Apr 17, 2009 at 5:35 pm #1495007Here is my last trip in warm weather with little chance of rain:
GG Murmur w/o hip belt = 6.2
MLD Silnylon Poncho/Tarp with stakes/lines = 12.6
Trimmed GG 3/8" Foam pad = 2.6
GG Polycro ground sheet = 2.0
BPL UL60 quilt = 12.4
Total = 35.8 oz (2lb 3.8 oz)If chance of rain in cooler weather (replace ground sheet with bivy and UL 60 with Nanatek-which is on order):
GG Murmur w/o hip belt = 6.2
MLD Silnylon Poncho/Tarp with stakes/lines = 12.6
MLD Soul Side Zip bivy = 7.9
Trimmed GG 3/8" Foam pad = 2.6
Nunatak Arc Specialist (.8 Quantum + ovefill) = 18.0
Total = 47.3 oz (2lb 15.3 oz)If I need lots of water, Murmur is replaced by ULA Conduit or Ohm. Sometimes use GG Nightlight torso @ 3.5 or BMW Torsolite @ 9.6. Also, no rain gear carried with poncho/tarp :)

6.4 lbsComparing my weights to same gear of others, I find my weights are greater. Used my digital fish scale to weigh everything…guess it's not calibrated. Nonetheless, I've never considered the totals before, and I'm satisfied with the numbers.

WM Alpinelite 2lbs
warmlite 60" 23ozs.

Apr 17, 2009 at 7:46 pm #1495041"but not everyone uses the same set of stakes or length/amount of guylines, and it is part of your shelter system."
That's exactly why I didn't include stake weight. The kind of stakes I use may not be the same stakes someone else uses (i.e. MSR Groundhog vs. titanium shepard's hook). Also, while I may prefer to bring a certain number of stakes, another person may find that a different number of stakes works better for him with the same exact shelter, or that one type of terrain requires a different type and number of stakes than another type of terrain (forest vs. desert vs. high plains, etc.).
Apr 17, 2009 at 8:09 pm #1495046pack – GoLite Jam2 (large, stock) – 26oz.
tent – BA Seedhouse SL2 – 46oz.
bag – WM Summerlite (regular) – 19oz.
pad – Thermarest Prolite 3 (short) – 11oz.total – 6lb 6oz.
On the heavy side, but I plan on modifying the pack and tent to address that. I'd save a lot by moving to a tarp but after spending a summer in Labrador I won't venture anywhere I can't cut myself off from the bugs completely. I /still/ have nightmares about the clouds of blackflies.
Apr 17, 2009 at 8:12 pm #1495049Kathmandu alpaca pack 106oz
Noname 2 inch inflatable foam pad 32oz
Quest 2P tent 113oz
Mountain designs dryloft bag 57ozTOTAL 19.25 pounds (308 ounces)
EDIT: Oh, wait, that was my baseweight before I joined BPL. ;-)
Apr 17, 2009 at 8:25 pm #1495052Is it just me, or does this seem a bit like comparing the size of your willy with the other boys behind the bike shed at school? ;-)
Seriously though, I find it amusing that most of us here seem to adopt an apologetic tone when our Big 4 weight is over six pounds. Like we've been naughty or something.
ps. on my next overseas trip my big four will probably be:
GG nimbus meridian (56oz)
Tarptent Scarp 2 (52 ounces)
Neoair pad (14 ounces)
WM ultralite (32 ounces)
Total = 154 ounces = 9.62 poundsClearly I have been a very naughty boy (he's not the messiah!). The pack is because I'm traveling overseas and need a panel loader for day-to-day use. The Scarp 2 is because I'm with my GF, and ultralite is because its cold.
I'm still really torn about the pack though. You guys are making me feel really inadequate. ;-) I'm forever tossing up getting a smaller, lighter pack and taking a second "tote" bag for general travel stuff. Sigh…
Apr 18, 2009 at 6:12 am #1495108Zpacks Z1 /w Sternum strap and waist belt: 5.29

Add in my MLD Superlighy bivy /w minibiner (5.99) and you get 39.59.
Re: stakes. I have three sets of stakes I primarily use: some 6" Easton nails, some 9" Easton nails and some Vargo Ti Shepard's hooks. The 6" nails are my default, but I will take different stakes depending on the expected soil conditions. BPL did a great review of stake holding power a while back.
See my SUL list in my profile.Apr 18, 2009 at 6:50 am #1495113ULA Circuit 2008 with extra foam padding: 1 kg

MLD 2-Thirds XP Quilt: 264 gTotal: 2.9 kg- 6.5 pounds/ 102 ounces

This will go up when I get my Warmlite DAM, but I'm fine with the weight as I need the equipment for where I hike.
Apr 18, 2009 at 10:46 am #1495153Raymond, sorry I should have been more specific on season. My setup is the only one I have for year round use on 4 plus days thru hiking/trekking. Less than that and I take my Ion. I don't even bother to weight it as its so light. I am a three season person. When winter hits I do my best to find spring in the southern hemisphere. I am just using the Lafuma as a test. At the end of the summer I will switch back to either an western Mountaineering or feathered friends 30 degree bag. The 30 covers everything and I can add and subtract clothing as needed. Ali
Apr 19, 2009 at 1:15 pm #1495404I go heavy on the pack. I carry a LuxuryLite frame and hipbelt with a converted GoLite Gust attached. I have yet to find a pack that weighs less than a kilo/2lbs that carries comfortably.
Summer trips:
Frame: 18oz
Hipbelt: 8oz
Gust: 9oz
WM POD 30 bag: 14oz
Half a Refuge-X (including stakes): 8oz
Torso sized Ridgerest: 4oztotal: 61oz, 3.8lbs or 1.7kg
For colder trips, pack stays the same, but swap the POD30 for a POD15 (750g/26oz), the ridgerest for a DAM (680g/24oz) and the Refuge-X for half a Nallo 2 (1kg/35oz).
120oz/7.5lbs/3.4kg
I can't imagine why stake weight wouldn't be included in shelter weight?
Apr 19, 2009 at 4:06 pm #1495439>I can't imagine why stake weight wouldn't be included in shelter weight?
There is only 1 logical reason:
That you don't use stakes at all.
Apr 19, 2009 at 4:55 pm #1495451"There is only 1 logical reason:

Then your stake weight would be zero. If you use stakes for your shelter, then surely you should count that weight as part of your shelter weight? Unless you use your spork, toothbrush, trekking poles and chopsticks as stakes, in which case I'm not sure which category you would attribute them too! Hmmm….a new gadget…titanium spake=spork on one end and sharpened stake on the other. And then there's the titanium handled toothstake…
