Per Wm. Puckett's suggestion, starting a new thread. This is a reminder of the forthcoming lunch for the MN "Chapter" of the BPLers at Salut (a French/American Restaurent in St. Paul).
917 Grand Ave
St Paul, MN 55105
For 11:30 am, Sat, April 18.
Current headcount is:
Vicky and Craig Maki
Dan Cunningham and Leah (75% sure)
Matt and Jacci
Keri Poeppe and Joe
Phil and Leanne Davis
It should be fun. We'll be meeting nearby afterwards at a park for gear showoff, whatever. Because of the change of restaurant, we need to rethink the nearby park we go to afterwards.
See below thread for reason for change of location. The time/place/city has remained the same, and the price for this restaurant is affordable – see menu.
PS – so the below thread makes sense for late comers, the original location was The Highland Grill but we could not book them for a reservation.Apr 10, 2009 at 9:17 pm #1493118
Dan & Leah are now 75% sure.Apr 11, 2009 at 5:09 am #1493166
I forget nearest place but some of the St. Paulers will let us know. Someone bring a simple to follow map of how to get there.
Here's a mapquest link to the Highland Grill. We can retire afterwards to Hidden Falls Park, to the southwest. Zoom out one step and you'll see the closest entrance at Hidden Falls Drive.Apr 11, 2009 at 6:25 am #1493176
If you're open to additional members my wife (Leanne) and I would be interested in joining you on the 18th. We don't get a lot of chances to share hiking experiences with most of our friends/family.Apr 11, 2009 at 1:31 pm #1493264
Phil, you and your wife are most welcome and I have added you two to head count. Any other BPL members are welcome too. I am hiking Afton St. Park now and using my Iphone.Apr 11, 2009 at 1:56 pm #1493267
Jacci and I will be there.Apr 12, 2009 at 6:51 pm #1493520
Dan, I hope you come and I hope you bring your 3.5 oz gravity feed water filter system. I'm interested in the tubing setup as I understand some have had problems with a snug fit for the Aqua Mira Frontier Pro filter. I'm also interested in placement and tubing length before and beneath the filter.Apr 12, 2009 at 6:55 pm #1493522
I'm bringing my recently-crafted MYOG half-bag.Apr 12, 2009 at 7:03 pm #1493524
Cool Matt, and if you have a sewing machine you super like, bring or post what model sewing machine you have. I'd like to find a super reliable sewing machine that does not jam. I only care about simple sewing projects but sometimes involving working with thick material, such as sewing velcro onto nylon (making home-made "dirty girl" gaiters out of normal gaiters); repairing silnylon tents, spinnaker ground cloths, etc.Apr 12, 2009 at 8:36 pm #1493541
I'll bring the full hydration setup.
I'll also bring the BushBuddy setup – I'm sure some would be interested in it.Apr 12, 2009 at 8:37 pm #1493542
<–This guy.Apr 12, 2009 at 9:17 pm #1493549
I'm calling to make reservations for 14 people Monday. If I don't posting confirmation of such by Monday night, bug me via PM Tuesday morning, ok? Thanks! (Sometimes I get so busy during the day at work, I forget personal chores.)Apr 13, 2009 at 2:06 pm #1493695
I just called and spoke to Valentina at the Highland Grill ( 651-690-1173 ). She said they don't take reservations but ask people to call 90 minutes ahead of time. She said we'll be split up into either 2 or 3 tables next to each other. I'll create an alarm on my iphone to call 90 minutes ahead a time for the reminder.Apr 13, 2009 at 3:15 pm #1493710

I'll bring along my Gorilla Pack for the Hidden Falls show and tell.Apr 13, 2009 at 5:22 pm #1493764
I'm not surprised they wouldn't take reservations – I didn't think they did. It's a relatively small classic diner type place. It's good, but probably not the best for a large group. Here's a pic of the interior:
Should we consider a change of venue? There are TONS of restaurants in the area. I'm just not sure if people wanted to sit as a group or not.Apr 13, 2009 at 5:41 pm #1493766
I'm game but clueless for nearby options.Apr 13, 2009 at 7:10 pm #1493779
Hmmm, my expectation was based on experiences at its "sister" grill … the Longfellow. Was looking for a moderately priced place … a bit more inclusive. The Longfellow is a bit larger, Mpls end of the Lake St. bridge, about 3 miles up river.
Otherwise, suggest an alternative.Apr 13, 2009 at 8:26 pm #1493800
Ok, I think I have the best substitution. I called Longfellow but they like the Highland Grill do not take reservations and can't seat us together so I ruled them out.
My college son works part-time on Grand Ave in St. Paul, and he likes the French/American restaurant, Salut, and I ate there twice with him and they can seat 14 and I booked a reservation with the Manager, Andy, for same time/same date, 11:30am, Sat., April 18 for 14 people. Good food, affordable prices.
Here is the menu.

Reservation under the name, Roleigh Martin and the manager knows it's for a group of backpackinglight.com members.Apr 13, 2009 at 8:47 pm #1493808
I updated the Wiki for this event — you others might want to edit the wiki page and have a pointer to your profile page. I added Phil Davis name but not link. click "edit" — how you do the link is obvious by seeing how it's done.
PS, I did a private PM to everyone in the head count notifying them of the change of location and gave them a link to this page.Apr 14, 2009 at 5:54 am #1493856
I haven't been there before – looks cool! Good choice Roleigh.Apr 14, 2009 at 7:20 am #1493873

I guess I've got bad luck. I had to work the weekend of the last dinner, and now I have to work this weekend as well.
On a different note, what do folks think about getting together for some actual camping in May? It could be as simple as Afton for a night or the SHT for a couple of nights.Apr 14, 2009 at 7:32 am #1493876
I think the Afton idea sounds great, I try and spend every 2 day weekend at Afton when weather is good, starting in May. I actually did Afton last weekend.
What time does Ranger open up the office there, perhaps 1/2 hour after opening is a good meeting time, I don't know if that is 9:30 am or whatnot.
Or we could go for a noon meetup, so some can come early, hike awhile, others late, but all meet around noon. Perhaps that is more convenient for all.
The Minneapolis-StPaul Backpackers Meetup.com group meets there the 25th of April so that is not a good weekend.
Many are doing Superior Hiking Trail ventures on 3 day weekends and it's probably not a good idea for too large of group to do the same segment at SHT, although I'm open for a 4th of July weekend group of up to about 6 hikers doing a 2.5 day segment.Apr 14, 2009 at 9:55 pm #1494126
The MN BPL Google Map Link was bad – it is here
I originally posted the google map link to Longellows. Sorry.
The address and all other information is correct. It is Salut at 917 Grand Ave, St Paul, MN 55105.Apr 15, 2009 at 12:57 am #1494157
I just found this thread, and at this late date was wondering if there is room for one more? Am most interested in the gear used by all, so the meet up after sounds like a great idea. I know of no other ultra-lighters close to my neck-of the woods (KC,Mo) Think of yourselves as a support group…:)Apr 15, 2009 at 11:34 am #1494267
Let's also move the location of the outside gear demo to Linwood Park, 5 blocks south of Salut (St. Clair Ave and Victoria St.)
