    Job Description: Melita Island BSA Advanced Camp Experience (ACE) Director

    General:

    The Melita Staff Team member responsible with the Camp Program Director for the Melita Island ACE Program. The ACE Director must be able to challenge the older campers at Melita with the specific high adventure activities of the program.

    Position Requirements:

    Ability as a mature adult (>21 years old) to win the respect and confidence of all camp staff, the volunteer unit leaders, and the participating youth.
    Experience at weeklong Boy Scout or other base camp operations, staff experience desirable but not required in the presence of strong skills. Eagle Scout or Silver Award rank desirable but not required in the presence of strong skils.

    Experience at designing a challenging program for 14–17 year old youth with the elements available to Melita, or the proven ability to set up such a program, is desirable.

    Knowledge of the high adventure, confidence, and leadership activities of the ACE program, with the ability to teach most of them.

    An Open mind to be alert to new ideas and methods.

    A working knowledge and application of leadership skills as determined by Camp Director.

    Ability and willingness to be a team player with the other members of staff.

    Availability for camp assignment from July 6th – August 8th, 2009. Multiyear availability is desirable. (same general timeframe each summer).

    Responsibilities include:

    Formulate and put in place the elements of Melita’s ACE program. The program may include confidence and leadership games, as well as the aquatics, nature, outdoor skills, sports and archery areas of the camp and accessible areas (Wild Horse Island). The program must meet BSA requirements and is to be documented and presented to the Camp Program Director and the Camp Director for approval by the Wednesday of Staff Week (July 8th). The program is to include safety considerations and compatibility with Melita Island’s emergency procedures.

    Schedule specific elements with Area Directors each week, focused on the participants of that week.
    Identify and specify adequate program equipment, expendables, trading post program support supplies, and other items as necessary for the success of the program. Complete a beginning and ending inventory and field care of all program equipment as applicable.

    Satisfy the expectations of the ACE Program participants and their leaders.

    Evaluate effectiveness of program to make improvements during the season;

    Provide basis for improving next year’s program through a written report with recommendations at the end of the season;

    Perform other assigned duties, including any shared responsibilities of the staff dealing with general camp needs, cleanliness, transportation, etc.
