I spend xmas in Alamogordo. Where can I get away for the day or a night or two? (I don't want White Sands NM this time.) What can you recommend in Lincoln National Forest?

White Mountain Wilderness? Smokey Bear Ranger District.

I've not been there this time of year when there is likely snow at higher elevations. Call the ranger station.

I think there are some trails out of the back of the state park, go up towards Cloudcroft, I think. And then there are always a lot of trails in Cloudcroft, where they've finished the rails-to-trails.
