I am currently working as the Wildlands Organizer for the Wyoming Wilderness Association (wildwyo.org). My big project for this year is to organize an inventory over 1.5 million acres of roadless areas in Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) of western Wyoming for their potential inclusion in the Wilderness Preservation System. A daunting task – it is a lot of real estate.

While our long term goal is to have as much acreage protected as capital W-wilderness our immediate goal is to have these lands managed to maintain their wilderness character. The Bridger-Teton National Forest is in the midst of writing their new management plan. We want their management plan to identify and manage these lands for their wilderness potential.

To accomplish this we need backcountry savvy wilderness advocates who are willing to travel in remote and rugged mountain terrain to document their wilderness character. Additionally, it is our hope that these volunteers will submit public comment in support of these areas being managed to maintain their wilderness character. An understanding of digital photography, GPS, writing public comment, and the 1964 Wilderness Act would be helpful.

We are having a wilderness inventory training near Jackson Hole on May 31/June 1. Ideally volunteers should attend, but not mandatory. We would be willing to train people according to their schedules. If someone was willing to spend a week or more of their vacation time volunteering to inventory and comment it would be the least we could do.

Please contact me at [email protected] or starting May 5 at 307-733-2920.
