Isn't the SUL version of the 550 the same as the 550 but without handles? Since the 550 is ten dollars cheaper couldn't I just buy the 550 and take off its handles to save .5 oz and make it the same weight as the SUL?
ThanksP.S. Anybody have one they want to sell? Eh?
Apr 21, 2008 at 9:48 pm #1429440Looking at the handle attachment area, there are 12 delicate "rivet like" points — two columns of three on each side of the two handles. Given this and the very thin wall of the cup, methinks ripping out the handles will likely damage the wall of the mug — rendering it completely useless.
IMO, it's pretty lousy of BPL to charge more for a cup that involves less steps to manufacture. But then, we are a capitalist society, and BPL has the legal right to charge whatever it thinks the market will bear.
Maybe diehard ULers who can't bear to lug two lousy ti handles deserve to pay more??? :)

Actually, it's because they are made on an automated assembly line, and the MFR passes on the loss in efficiency of batch making a lower numbers without handles.
If you want a good deal on a handless pot, by the SnowPeak Ti Bowl. Way less expensive. Better Volume to Weight Ratio than the SUL 550. Wider base (better heat transfer). Down side is no lid, but most gram weenies chuck the SUL 550 Lid and replace with foil anyway.

Has anyone else used a bowl instead of an actual pot?Edit: Just kidding I now see the post where this was all already discussed.
